BSA FUTURE DEBATES: "SHOULD YOU SHARE YOUR DNA DATA?"
Meetup Wed 24 Oct 2018
Location:   Quakers Friends Meeting House, 2 Church Street,, Reading RG1 2SB
Time:   19:30
The British Science Association (BSA) believes that science is a part of our everyday lives and that everyone should feel confident to talk about and be included in these topics. We want to empower everyone – not just scientists – to engage in conversation over science’s role in their own lives, their local economy, and the UK as a whole.

To make sure these conversations are happening at a local level, we are working with Genomics England to run a series of debates across the country, looking at specific topics relevant to today. Each year, Future Debates will focus on a particular issue.

This year’s topic: “Should you share your DNA data?”

What are the benefits and risks of a medical system that uses genomic data. How should it be stored and who should have access? Should everyone’s DNA be analysed at birth? And is there a duty to donate your genome, like we do with blood and organs?

It’s time to join the debate.

To introduce you to the subject, we have a panel that really knows their stuff!

These guys can cover it all, from the use of genetics in medicine to how the law could change to protect our genetic data. You can also find out first hand what it’s like to take part in the biggest genetic study of people in the world.

Dr Ed Blair
Clinical Director of the Oxford NHS Genomic Medicine Centre

Professor Anneke Lucassen
Professor of Clinical Genetics, Clinical Ethics and Law Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton

Nancy MolyneAux
Participant in the 100,000 Genomes Project

Across the UK, the National Health Service is preparing to start using DNA data as part of the treatment and services we receive from our doctors. This could mean huge improvements in the way the NHS prevents and treats illness, but it relies on large numbers of people sharing their full set of DNA for research.

Meanwhile, the Cambridge Analytica scandal has laid bare the lengths to which companies will go to turn a profit from our data. We now live in an age when an unprecedented amount of data is collected about our lives, and this data is not a finite resource – there are infinite ways to analyse and predict our potential future actions and desires from it.

How do you feel about the most personal information of all – your DNA sequence and health data – being stored along with millions of others? How would you want it to be stored, and by whom? Do we have a duty to share our DNA to improve healthcare?

Where: Reading Quaker (Friends) Meeting House
When: Wednesday 24 October, 7:30pm - 9:30pm

We have loads more information on our website, so take a look - we can't wait to see you there!

WINCHESTER SKEPTICS: "DIANA FLEISCHMAN WITH 'THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN MORALITY""
Meetup Thu 25 Oct 2018
Location:   The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   This is an external event hosted by Winchester Skeptics in the Pub
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the talk hosted by Winchester Skeptics In The Pub. Tonight's talk is titled “The evolution of human morality” and is led by Diana Fleischman.

Winchester Skeptics hosts a guest speaker on the last Thursday of every month. They provide an opportunity for people who are interested in science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking to socialise and discuss matters of interest.

What's the talk about?

Human morality developed in small face-to-face groups in which humans lived for the last hundreds of thousands of years. In these environments those who succeeded protected themselves against hostile outgroups, butchered animals, prioritized the welfare of themselves and their kin and managed to maintain a moral reputation while finding available opportunities for cheating.

Human moral limitation are plain in a world that is so different compared to the environment in which we evolved. Now we are aware of the suffering of billions of strangers and trillions of animals, our moral inconsistences are magnified by surveillance, and we must prevent artificial agents developing a morality completely antithetical to our survival. How does our evolved morality cope with this novel ethical landscape and will we allow ourselves moral enhancement?

The Speaker:

Dr Diana Fleischman grew up in in the Southern United States in a religious and conservative area where evolution was not taught in school. At 12 Diana earned the moniker “monkey girl” for fervently endorsing evolution to teachers and peers. Attending both Catholic church and synagogue further formed the foundation of a sceptical perspective on religion. During a formative year at the LSE shortly after the September 11th attacks, Diana read Dawkins and other evolutionists extensively, kindling an obsession with atheism and evolutionary psychology.

As an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Portsmouth, Diana teaches and researches many different topics including disgust, human sexuality and biological bases of behaviour. Involvement with effective altruism, a movement that aims to use evidence to accomplish the most good in terms of human and nonhuman wellbeing, prompted Diana to more deeply consider human morality its evolution and shortcomings, the topic of this Darwin Day talk. Diana is a sentientist, someone who prioritizes the capacity to suffer as the basis for moral consideration; Find her on Twitter @Sentientist.

The Venue:

The Licensed front cafe bar at the Winchester Discovery Centre area will be open from 7.00pm. The talks for Winchester Skeptics in the Pub start at 7.30pm in the main theatre. Suggested donation £3 for entry into a book raffle to cover speakers expenses and theatre hire that is collected at the door.

Hosted by the Winchester Skeptics in the Pub

FOCUSING ON THE PROBLEM - PUTTING EVERYDAY VISION INTO PERSPECTIVE
Meetup Mon 29 Oct 2018
Location:   The Tea Bar, 9-13 London Street, Basingstoke
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   Postcode: RG21 7NT
The speaker for the October 2018 meeting of Basingstoke Cafe Scientifique at The Tea Bar will be Prof. Anna Horwood, Professor of Orthoptics and Visual Development at the University of Reading. Professor Horwood will be discussing the topic of "Focusing on the problem - or maybe not: putting everyday vision into perspective".

SUMMARY
How we organise the processes involved in getting our eyes to focus on things is surprisingly complicated; and so when things go wrong (for instance with eye strain, squint, double vision and “lazy eye”) they can go wrong in many different ways. So as a clinician, I had got very used to dealing with clinical problems which didn’t fit the textbooks. In my talk I will explain that this might be because the theory needs to be re-thought. Many apparently obvious things about eyesight might not be as they seem.

BIOGRAPHY:
As well as a scientist, I am also still a clinical orthoptist (I’ll explain what that is, but it’s to do with binocular vision!) and a Mum. I have always worked in Eye Clinics in the NHS, but got involved in research later in my career. By a series of lucky accidents I ended up doing a PhD and I am now a Research Professor, running the Infant Vision Laboratory at the University of Reading. I have published over 40 scientific papers and I am also Research Director of the British & Irish Orthoptic Society.

Professor Horwood works with the charity Fight For Sight to promote understanding of the science of vision and what can go wrong with it.

VENUE:
The Tea Bar doors will be open from around 6.45pm before the talk which starts at 7:30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. We will aim to finish around 9:00pm as usual, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker until around 10:00pm.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses and buy cakes before questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee or drink (and cakes) at the bar to show your support for The Tea Bar who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.

RDG CAFE SCI: METAL-ORGANIC FRAMEWORKS – ACADEMIC CURIOSITY TO REAL APPLICATIONS
Meetup Wed 14 Nov 2018
Location:   Smokin Billy's Bar-B-Q, 61 St. Mary's Butts, Reading. RG1 2LG, Reading
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   An External Event Hosted by Ceri Brenner at Reading Cafe Scientifique
Reading Cafe Sci would like to extend a invitation to the Basingstoke Cafe Sci followers to attend this free talk. Tonight there will be an informal presentation by Dr Timothy Johnson who will present "Metal-organic frameworks". The presentation will be followed by a Q and A session.

FREE ENTRY. Restaurant is open from 6pm

Summary:
Dr Timothy Johnson presents Metal-organic frameworks – From Academic Curiosity to Real World Applications.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a chemical curiosity. By combining metal nodes with organic molecules, known as linkers, massive structures with unique properties can be created. These futuristic materials have a myriad of uses form selectively removing carbon dioxide from the air, production and delivery of new drugs and even protection for bacteria from harsh confines of space.

By careful consideration of the metal and linker combination, as well as the reaction conditions, it is possible to create an almost infinite number of structures and tune the material to a specific need. By understanding the metals clusters, linker functionality and the void space in these materials, disruptive technologies can be developed and deployed to improve the world those living in it.

Being a recent development in academia, commercial examples of these types of material are few and far between. This talk will highlight the fundamental work being conducted locally at Johnson Matthey and show how this learning is being applied to the production and testing of frameworks for real world applications.

Speaker:
Dr Timothy Johnson is a Senior Scientist at Johnson Matthey and leads the MOF research team. His role is to screen, produce and test MOFs and other novel porous materials for industrial applications. Having previously completed his PhD at The University of Liverpool, focusing on the use of doped metal oxides for the photocatalytic clean-up of waste water, he used this background in sustainable chemistry and material science to advance the use of MOFs commercially. Working closely with both industrial and academic partners he is also responsible for advancing JM’s fundamental understanding of these horizon three materials.

Format and Venue:

Smokin' Billy's will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy drinks to show your support for Smokin Billy's who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Location:   St Denys Community Centre, Main Hall, Corner of Priory Rd and Adelaide Rd opposite the Junction Inn, Southampton SO17 2JZ
Time:   20:00
Meeting:   Hosted by: Nigel Cooke, Southampton Cafe Scientifique Organiser
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the Southampton Cafe Sci talk at the Community Centre in St Denys in Southampton. The talk is being delivered by Prof Douglas Connelly from the Southampton based National Oceanographic Centre and is titled "CO2 sequestration".

VENUE:
Note: There is a strict policy of no drinks to be brought over from the pub to the community centre. There is level access with no steps. 200 metres from the Adelaide Rd side of St Denys railway station. Previous use of this hall finishes at 20:00 with 15 minutes grace, so the earliest expected start to the science cafe talks would be 20:20. Therefore no point in arriving here before 20:00 , but the foyer would be open , should it be raining.

ARRANGEMENTS:
For the first talk there will be a charge of 2 pounds per person to cover room hire, this may change in later months, dependent on the numbers of people turning up. With this room-hire structure there is no commercial element in requiring a break, so Q&A will follow immediately after the talk and so the end of the full session should not be much later than the previous structure.

The only noise in that venue on Tuesday nights is from a chess club. For any note takers, please bring a small torch with you as the lighting will be all high power fluorescent (prior to talk) and next to nothing (during talk), except spill-over from the projector, light from the foyer and a couple of other low level light sources, assuming the usual problem with fluorescent lamp "dimming", in practise.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed immediately by questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is £2.00 on the door and is open to everyone.

Winning teams' experiments will be built and carried out aboard the ISS by NASA astronauts.

The Mission Discovery programme includes the following themes:

NASA leadership and team building
How space exploration benefits life on Earth
Experiencing the environment of space
Looking at different kinds of experiment and what makes them great
How you succeed in your dreams and ambitions
Mission Discovery was launched in 2012. Since then, the team has been led by 13 NASA Astronauts across 4 continents for over 6,000 students, sending 20 experiments into space on 6 different rockets with more experiments scheduled to launch over the next year.

Mission Discovery winners have appeared on NASA TV, BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, along with numerous press publications internationally. If you’re looking for an exciting challenge, which could change your life and build your future, this is it!

RDG CAFE SCI: THE SHAKING PALSY: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Meetup Wed 5 Dec 2018
Location:   Smokin Billy's Bar-B-Q, 61 St. Mary's Butts, Reading. RG1 2LG, Reading
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   An External Event Hosted by Ceri Brenner at Reading Cafe Scientifique
Reading Cafe Sci would like to extend a invitation to the Basingstoke Cafe Sci followers to attend this free talk. Tonight there will be an informal presentation by Paul Bolam, professor of neuroscience in The Medical Research Council Unit, in the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford University who will present "The Shaking Palsy: Past, present and future of Parkinson’s disease". The presentation will be followed by a Q and A session.

FREE ENTRY. Restaurant is open from 6pm

Summary:
The neurodegenerative disorder we now call Parkinson’s disease was first formally described by James Parkinson in 1817. Of all the neurodegenerative disorders, Parkinson’s disease has been a success story: we know precisely what goes wrong that underlies the motor symptoms and we have good symptomatic treatments. However, we cannot alter the course of the disease and this is the challenge of the future.

Speaker
Paul Bolam is a professor of neuroscience in The Medical Research Council Unit, in the Department of Pharmacology at Oxford University. He worked for many years on the region of the brain involved in Parkinson’s disease and has published over 200 papers. His is still involved with the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre and acts as the co-Editor of the European Journal of Neuroscience. He will talk about the brain cells that die in Parkinson’s disease, about the current therapies that we have for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and what are the hopes for the future.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.

Be enthused, Be inspired, Join in the discussion #RdgCafeSci
