SOTON CAFE SCI: "ANTIBODIES: ENGAGING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AGAINST CANCER"
Location:   St Denys Community Centre, Main Hall, Corner of Priory Rd and Adelaide Rd opposite the Junction Inn, Southampton SO17 2JZ
Time:   20:00
Meeting:   Hosted by: Nigel Cooke, Southampton Cafe Scientifique Organiser
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the Southampton Cafe Sci talk at the Community Centre in St Denys in Southampton. The talk is being given by Prof Mark Cragg, Southampton University and is titled "Antibody immunotherapy: overcoming cancer by engaging the immune system".

VENUE:
Note: There is a strict policy of no drinks to be brought over from the pub to the community centre. There is level access with no steps. 200 metres from the Adelaide Rd side of St Denys railway station. Previous use of this hall finishes at 20:00 with 15 minutes grace, so the earliest expected start to the science cafe talks would be 20:20. Therefore no point in arriving here before 20:00 , but the foyer would be open , should it be raining.

ARRANGEMENTS:
For the first talk there will be a charge of 2 pounds per person to cover room hire, this may change in later months, dependent on the numbers of people turning up. With this room-hire structure there is no commercial element in requiring a break, so Q&A will follow immediately after the talk and so the end of the full session should not be much later than the previous structure.

The only noise in that venue on Tuesday nights is from a chess club. For any note takers, please bring a small torch with you as the lighting will be all high power fluorescent (prior to talk) and next to nothing (during talk), except spill-over from the projector, light from the foyer and a couple of other low level light sources, assuming the usual problem with fluorescent lamp "dimming", in practise.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed immediately by questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is £2.00 on the door and is open to everyone.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.

Hosted by: Nigel Cooke, Southampton Cafe Scientifique Organiser

NEW SCIENTIST: "EXPLORING THE FUTURE" @ MAKERSPACE
Location:   Basingstoke Makerspace, Maritime House, 65 New Road, Basingstoke
Time:   18:45
Meeting:   Hosted by Bob Clifford at Basingstoke Makerspace - straight through the door into the rear of the building
Bob Clifford, the organiser from Basingstoke Cafe Scientifique, is the host for this evening's Webinar from New Scientist with members of Cafe Sci, Basingstoke Makerspace and Basingstoke Friends.

This is part of an occasional webinar and discussion series on subjects of general interest to the community. There will be a door donation of £3 for a New Scientist book raffle to contribute towards the cost of the room plus the provision of tea, coffee and biscuits.

The webinar broadcast starts at 7.00pm ... so please arrive around 6.45pm to get yourself some tea or coffee and biscuits.

What topics are being discussed?

Humanity’s future is being shaped by the technologies emerging today. These technologies include artificial intelligence and robotics, future transport and renewable power, data mining and data privacy. They are set to have a huge impact on the way we live, work and play.

But these technologies also raise important questions: do we clearly understand the potential of artificial intelligence, how will robots change the nature of work and society more broadly, can we exploit personal information and keep it private at the same time, and are we doing enough to make energy renewable?

An expert panel of engineers and scientists will be challenged to discuss these questions and the technologies behind them to better understand how they will change our lives by 2030.

Who is on the panel?

Salah Sukkarieh
Professor of robotics and intelligent systems at the University of Sydney

Lachlan McCalman
Machine learning engineer at Data61, Australia’s leading data innovation group

Matt MacLeod
Engineer and manager of Advanced Technical Vehicles & Site Development at Toyota Australia

Brad Yelland

WINCHESTER SKEPTICS: "DR JOANNA BAGNIEWSKA - ALIENS AMONG US"
Location:   The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   This is an external event hosted by Winchester Skeptics in the Pub
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the talk hosted by Winchester Skeptics In The Pub. Tonight's talk is titled “Aliens among us” and is led by Dr Joanna Bagniewska.

Winchester Skeptics hosts a guest speaker on the last Thursday of every month. They provide an opportunity for people who are interested in science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking to socialise and discuss matters of interest.

What's the talk about?

Aliens: supremely adaptable, successful and dangerous. A tagline for a sci-fi horror? No, it’s the reality around us. Invasive alien species – species that have come, or been brought, from one part of the world to another – can pose a huge threat to our health, finances and biodiversity. However, we can also learn a lot from them. How do we study them? What do we know about them? Can we stop the invasions? Come to the talk to find out!

The Speaker:

Dr Joanna Bagniewska is a zoologist, specialising in behavioural ecology and marking undergraduate essays. In her spare time, she does science stand-up comedy, which really isn’t that different from her academic teaching at the University of Reading. She comes from Poland, is part of the Oxfordshire Mammal Group and has a soft spot for hedgehogs.

(Joanna has asked us if we would prefer something a bit more serious. We think this is fine!)

The Venue:

The Licensed front cafe bar at the Winchester Discovery Centre area will be open from 7.00pm. The talks for Winchester Skeptics in the Pub start at 7.30pm in the main theatre. Suggested donation £3 for entry into a book raffle to cover speakers expenses and theatre hire that is collected at the door.

WINCHESTER SKEPTICS: "DR CHARLOTTE RILEY WITH 'GIN, BUNTING & BLOODY RAILWAYS'"
Location:   The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   This is an external event hosted by Winchester Skeptics in the Pub
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the talk hosted by Winchester Skeptics In The Pub. Tonight's talk is titled “Gin, bunting and bloody railways” and is led by Dr Charlotte Riley.

Winchester Skeptics hosts a guest speaker on the last Thursday of every month. They provide an opportunity for people who are interested in science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking to socialise and discuss matters of interest.

What's the talk about?

The British Empire was the largest empire in modern history. At its height, it covered a quarter of the world's surface and encompassed a fifth of the world's population. For centuries, Britannia ruled the waves; from Ireland to India, from Ghana to Guiana, the union flag flew high over British territory. Britain tells this story as a story of triumphs: a small island coming proudly to dominate the world, with the empire cast both as a sign of military might and as a humanitarian mission, bringing peace and civilisation to the wider world.

But the reality was very different; the British empire was built on violence and exploitation, the populations under British rule rejected and resisted imperialism, and the British at home had a very ambivalent relationship to 'their' empire. This talk will look at some of the key myths of empire, and will explore why the British still have such a complicated understanding of their imperial past, and how the popular memory of empire still influences culture, politics and society today.

The Speaker:

Charlotte Lydia Riley is a lecturer in twentieth century British history at the University of Southampton. She writes about the British empire and decolonization, aid and humanitarianism, and the Labour Party; her book explores all of these things to examine the connections between empire and the British metropole in the late twentieth century. She lives in east London and spends a lot of time on trains.

WINCHESTER SCI CTR - OUR SOLAR SYSTEM, COMPARED TO EXOPLANETS
Location:   Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, Telegraph Way, Off Alresford Road, Winchester, SO21 1HX
Time:   18:30
Meeting:   This is an external event hosted by Winchester Science Centre
PLEASE NOTE THIS TALK IS AT THE WINCHESTER SCIENCE CENTRE

Tonight's talk by the Winchester Science Centre is titled "Our Solar System, compared to exoplanets" and is led by Dr Amaury Triaud (University of Birmingham).

These Wednesday lectures are aimed at a level a little above most popular science lectures, so come prepared to exercise your brain and learn the science behind the headlines. The speakers are chosen from the best academic speakers in the UK, with a talent for explaining difficult concepts and the knowledge to give the very latest news from the research community.

Although the primary audience is adults, older children are also welcome to attend.

Abstract:
We will look at recent discoveries in exoplanets - planets orbiting other stars than the Sun. Exoplanets have surprised researchers by how different they appear to the eight planets we know so well. But are we really distinct, or just one system amongst a multitude? We will explore the properties of our planets, and those of others Suns, comparing them to one another.

From this comparison we will see how many similarities exist, and also, how many differences. Those provide us with a chance to investigate how nature produces planets.

The Lecturer:
A regular visitor to observatories in the Atacama Desert, Amaury Triaud is the discoverer of over one hundred exoplanets.

He obtained his PhD at the Observatoire de Genève in Switzerland, then moved across the globe to do postdocs at MIT, Cambridge, US and the University of Toronto, Canada before becoming a Kavli Institute fellow at the other Cambridge here in the UK.

His observations focus on planetary systems that are different compared to our own, either by the type of planets that compose those systems, by their architectures, or because of the type of star(s) they orbit. As part of the SPECULOOS collaboration, he now searches for planets the same size and the same temperature as the Earth and aims to find out if life emerged elsewhere in the Universe. The first such examples were found in the TRAPPIST-1 system.

Active in outreach, he created an exoplanet exhibit at the University of Toronto at Scarborough in 2015, has been scientific consultant for a sci-fi trilogy entitled Quantika and has engaged in public lectures, debates, scientific cafes, observing nights, visits of the observatory, classroom interventions, multidisciplinary seminars, exhibits. Besides all his scientific endeavours, he enjoys fencing, photography, tango, (g)astronomy and anything creative that comes his way.

Event Schedule:

6pm: doors open, The Hub is open for drinks and snacks

6.30pm: talk begins

Tickets: £10 per person.

Advance booking by calling the Science Centre. Free parking for evening events at Winchester Science. Suitable for ages 11yr+. Fully licensed bar available. This event will take place in the planetarium.

This show is a fundraising event for Winchester Science Centre.

WINCHESTER SKEPTICS: "DIANA FLEISCHMAN WITH 'THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN MORALITY""
Location:   The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester
Time:   19:30
Meeting:   This is an external event hosted by Winchester Skeptics in the Pub
Basingstoke Cafe Sci subscribers are invited to the talk hosted by Winchester Skeptics In The Pub. Tonight's talk is titled “The evolution of human morality” and is led by Diana Fleischman.

Winchester Skeptics hosts a guest speaker on the last Thursday of every month. They provide an opportunity for people who are interested in science, skepticism, rationalism and critical thinking to socialise and discuss matters of interest.

What's the talk about?

Human morality developed in small face-to-face groups in which humans lived for the last hundreds of thousands of years. In these environments those who succeeded protected themselves against hostile outgroups, butchered animals, prioritized the welfare of themselves and their kin and managed to maintain a moral reputation while finding available opportunities for cheating.

Human moral limitation are plain in a world that is so different compared to the environment in which we evolved. Now we are aware of the suffering of billions of strangers and trillions of animals, our moral inconsistences are magnified by surveillance, and we must prevent artificial agents developing a morality completely antithetical to our survival. How does our evolved morality cope with this novel ethical landscape and will we allow ourselves moral enhancement?

The Speaker:

Dr Diana Fleischman grew up in in the Southern United States in a religious and conservative area where evolution was not taught in school. At 12 Diana earned the moniker “monkey girl” for fervently endorsing evolution to teachers and peers. Attending both Catholic church and synagogue further formed the foundation of a sceptical perspective on religion. During a formative year at the LSE shortly after the September 11th attacks, Diana read Dawkins and other evolutionists extensively, kindling an obsession with atheism and evolutionary psychology.

As an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Portsmouth, Diana teaches and researches many different topics including disgust, human sexuality and biological bases of behaviour. Involvement with effective altruism, a movement that aims to use evidence to accomplish the most good in terms of human and nonhuman wellbeing, prompted Diana to more deeply consider human morality its evolution and shortcomings, the topic of this Darwin Day talk. Diana is a sentientist, someone who prioritizes the capacity to suffer as the basis for moral consideration; Find her on Twitter @Sentientist.

PLEASE NOTE THIS TALK IS AT THE WINCHESTER SCIENCE CENTRE

Tonight's talk by the Winchester Science Centre is titled "It’s about time" and is led by Professor Don Kurtz (University of Central Lancashire).

Abstract:

The Lecturer:
Don Kurtz was born in San Diego, California, to an American father and Canadian mother. He obtained his PhD in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976, then spent 24 years in South Africa at the University of Cape Town, where he was Professor and Life Fellow. Don has dual British and American citizenship and has been Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Central Lancashire since 2001. He was recently a Vice President of the Royal Astronomical Society and serves on many international committees. He is frequently invited to speak internationally to both professional astronomers and to the public.

Don observes with some of the largest telescopes in the world, has over 2000 nights at the telescope, and over 470 professional publications. He is the discoverer of a class of pulsating, magnetic stars that are the most peculiar stars known. He is co-author of the fundamental textbook “Asteroseismology”.

Don enthusiastically gives many public lectures per year to diverse audiences all over the world on a wide range of topics. Location:   Basingstoke Makerspace, Maritime House, 65 New Road, Basingstoke
Time:   19:00
Meeting:   Hosted by Basingstoke Makerspace - straight through the door into the rear of the building
Science and Tech enthusiasts in Basingstoke Cafe Sci who like their technology a bit more practical are invited to try out something new at the Basingstoke Makerspace Open Evening from 7.00pm.

For more details about Basingstoke MakerSpace, see their web site below:

http://www.basingstokemakerspace.org.uk/

You will find Basingstoke Makerspace in their new premises at Maritime House. This is the old Royal Naval Association club building which they have recently taken over. Look for the flat roofed building on New Road behind the Top of Town area just past the Council Offices.

What they will be doing ...
Weekly open evening is when you can come along and chat about your projects and what you would like to achieve.

What to bring ...
Bring your ideas and projects to work on.

Important to know ...
If you park here you need to display a permit. Park if there is space and ask for a permit to display. If you are a paying member you can keep the permit.

Afterwards we join up with the Basingstoke Friends Meetup in the Maidenhead Wetherspoons pub from around 9.00pm for a drink and a chat. We are normally somewhere near the front of the pub ... look for the Basingstoke Friends table sign.

Kevin Roche is your host for the evening. He will be able to answer any questions you have on how to become a member of the Makerspace.
Hosted by:   Kevin Roche, Bob Clifford
