What is Cafe Scientifique?

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology.

Meetings have taken place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.

The first Cafes Scientifique in the UK were held in Leeds in 1998. From there, cafes have gradually spread across the country and now also to many other places around the World.

Currently, some forty or so cafes meet regularly across the UK to hear scientists or writers on science talk about their work and discuss it with diverse audiences.

Basingstoke Cafe Scientifique meets on the last Monday of the month with the doors opening at 7:00pm for the speaker to start at 7:30pm. The talk about the subject of the evening lasts for around 30-40 minutes. This is then followed by a short break before the general discussion period in which the audience are encouraged to contribute by the intimate setting. We aim to finish around 9:00pm.  There are no tickets and Cafe Sci is open to all.

When there is a bank holiday, the meeting may be held be at a different date or in another venue. Details of any changes to meetings will be shown on this web site and subscribers to our web site will receive regular updates by email.

Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, not a shop window for science. We are committed to promoting public engagement with science and to making science accountable.
